Plot

Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, 13-year-old Kate (Greer Robson) faces upheaval after her mother's death. Sent to live with an aunt while her father relocates for work in Wellington, she decides to track him down. On her journey, she leaps onto a boxcar and meets Patrick (Peter Phelps), a troubled WWI vet on the run for accidentally injuring a repo man. Together, they pose as father and daughter, navigating New Zealand's vast landscapes while advocating for struggling farmers and the homeless, uniting over their shared struggles and dreams.
