Plot

Vikram (Ashotosh Gowariker), an Indian immigrant from Bombay, arrives in San Francisco with dreams of a new beginning. However, his excitement quickly fades when customs officials unexpectedly reduce his tourist visa from six months to just one. Upon reaching his sponsor's address, he discovers the building is deserted, and his application to the University of California has been denied. Later, he encounters Sue (Heidi Carpenter), a punk-rock woman working at a late-night horror film theater, and he grows quite attached to her, even proposing marriage as a way to forge a new life in America.
