Whale Island explores the complex relationship between Taiwan's people and the sea that envelops their island. Despite its proximity to the ocean, a deep-seated fear stemming from political, historical, and religious factors has caused a cultural detachment from the water. Guided by oceanic literature author Liao Hung-chi and underwater photographer Ray Chin, viewers are invited on a journey that reexamines the significance of the sea. Through their insights, the film encourages contemplation on how the ocean could shape not only individual lives but also the future of Taiwan itself.
