Plot
After attending a demonstration for increased pensions, retired man Umberto Domenico Ferrari comes back to his boarding house only to face his landlady's ultimatum: pay 15,000 lire by month's end or face eviction with his loyal dog. Struggling to gather the funds, Umberto pretends to be ill to secure a stay in the hospital, leaving his cherished dog with the landlady's young maid, who is dealing with her own troubles as she awaits a child alone.
