Plot
In a gripping retelling of the tragic final journey of the Nantucket whaleship Essex, the crew faces a harrowing fate when a sperm whale attacks and sinks their ship in November 1820. Stranded in the vast Pacific Ocean, the men must choose between heading west to the nearest islands, a daunting thousand miles away, or embarking on a perilous trek of nearly three thousand miles to reach the South American coast. Fearing cannibals, they opt for the longer route. Almost three months pass before the first whaleboat is rescued, leaving only three survivors. A week later, the captain's boat is found with just two men remaining. The fate of the third whaleboat is unknown, highlighting the extremes of human endurance in the struggle for survival.
