Borrowing from a Dani fable, the title "Dead Birds" sets the stage for a story steeped in myth. Gardner narrates the tale of a race between a bird and a snake, determining humanity's fate: eternal life or inevitable death. The bird triumphs, sealing mankind’s mortality. Central to the narrative are Weyak, a brave warrior tasked with defending his tribe's border, and Pua, a young boy portrayed as frail and clumsy. Their contrasting strengths and weaknesses unfold against a backdrop of cultural beliefs and the harsh realities of life and death.
