Plot

Set in the 1870s California, cowboy Lincoln 'Linc' Bartlett stumbles upon a slave auction for Chinese women in San Francisco. He decides to rescue Kim Sung, purchasing her with hopes of granting her freedom. However, Linc soon realizes that liberation without support is futile, as Kim doesn’t speak English and faces a harsh world. Bringing her home as a housekeeper complicates matters, especially with his disapproving mother, Ma Bartlett. Tensions rise when Linc and Kim develop feelings for each other, igniting jealousy in Cheng Lu, a fellow Chinese immigrant.
