In 1944, within a Jewish ghetto in Eastern Europe, Jakob Heym accidentally overhears a German radio broadcast revealing that the Soviet Army is gradually advancing into central Europe. To prevent his friend Mischa from jeopardizing his life for mere potatoes, Jakob shares this information and claims he has a radio—an act that could lead to execution in the ghetto. Before long, news of Jakob's secret spreads, igniting a flicker of hope among the residents. As a result, Jakob is thrust into the daunting role of fabricating increasingly elaborate stories to satisfy their newfound optimism.
