Plot

Set in the late 19th century, Mr. Chipping, a dedicated Latin teacher at Brookfield boys' boarding school, leads a solitary life until he unexpectedly marries the spirited Kathie during a walking holiday. She becomes a beloved presence in his life and at the school, but her early death leaves him heartbroken. As World War One looms, the new headmaster Ralston seeks to oust him. However, the students rally in support of Chipping, and with the backing of former pupil Sir John Rivers, he ultimately steps into the role of headmaster when Ralston heads off to war.
