In 1931, aspiring writer Christopher Isherwood arrives in Berlin, lured by the vibrant gay scene and the invitation of his friend W. H. Auden. Amidst the city's chaos, he develops a romance with street sweeper Heinz, offering financial support for the boy's ailing mother. Their relationship faces challenges, particularly from Heinz's brother Gerhardt, a staunch Nazi who disapproves of Christopher's involvement. As Isherwood navigates love and societal tensions, he becomes increasingly aware of the darkening political landscape surrounding him.
