Every immigrant family carries a unique tale of their journey. My own narrative unfolds through the lens of my Chinese-American heritage. My father’s gripping account of his escape from communism in 1966—seven days of walking followed by a four-hour swim to Macau—once seemed distant to me. However, a return trip to China with him rekindled my interest in his past. Through this shared experience, I began to understand the profound ties to identity and the challenges of adapting to a new life in a foreign land.
