Plot

In "The Sugarland Express," married petty criminals Lou-Jean and Clovis Poplin face a heartbreaking loss when their baby is taken by the state of Texas. Determined to reclaim their child, Lou-Jean breaks Clovis out of jail, leading them to abduct their son from his foster family. In their desperate escape, they also take a highway patrol officer hostage. As a widespread manhunt ensues throughout Texas, the couple inadvertently gains a following, transforming into unexpected folk heroes while forming a surprising connection with their captive.
