Plot
In a bleak future, insurance fraud investigator William Gold travels to Shanghai to probe a counterfeit operation dealing in "papelles"—advanced passports that document individuals’ identities and DNA. He becomes romantically involved with Maria Gonzalez, the mastermind behind the forgeries. After their intense relationship, Gold returns home, having implicated a colleague in the scheme. However, when a customer of Gonzalez is discovered murdered, Gold is summoned back to Shanghai to finalize the investigation, facing the consequences of his earlier choices.
