Plot

German reporter Philip Winter struggles with writer's block while attempting to craft an article on America. As he plans his return to Germany, he meets a German woman and her nine-year-old daughter, Alice, who are also trying to catch a flight home. The three form an unexpected bond, driven by circumstance. When the mother requests Philip to look after Alice for a short time, it soon becomes clear that he will be caring for her far longer than he anticipated, leading to unforeseen adventures and challenges.
