Plot
Karl Heinrich, the lonely heir to the principality of Rutania, has spent his childhood isolated within castle walls. Upon reaching adulthood, he is sent to the University of Heidelberg, where he finally experiences friendship and falls in love with Katie Ruder, his childhood companion and the innkeeper's niece. Just as his life begins to blossom, political unrest in Rutania demands his return home. With the specter of war looming, Heinrich makes a poignant visit to Heidelberg, where he must say a heartbreaking goodbye to Katie, leaving their future uncertain.
