During the 1930s, a dwindling village in Provence struggles as its youth flee to cities for easier jobs, leaving behind only a handful of elderly residents and the poacher Panturle. Longing to revitalize his home, Panturle dreams of marriage and a farming life. His fate takes a turn with the arrival of Urbain Gedemus, a traveling knife-grinder, and the downtrodden Arsule, whom Gedemus treats cruelly. When Arsule learns of Panturle’s aspirations, she escapes her situation to join him. Together, they embrace the challenges of farming, discovering joy in their shared dreams.
