In 1938 Vienna, lawyer Josef Bartok finds his escape to the USA thwarted when the Gestapo arrests him amid the Nazi invasion. Determined not to betray his principles, he withstands their relentless pressure but is soon plunged into solitary confinement. As months of psychological torment take their toll, Bartok discovers an old chess book, igniting a spark of resilience within him. This newfound passion offers a temporary refuge from his suffering, yet it quickly spirals into a dangerous obsession that challenges his sanity and survival.
