In 1975, the Guinness Book of World Records reached out to skateboard promoter James O'Mahoney, requesting him to organize a skateboard race. This led to the inaugural Signal Hill Speed Run, marking the first-ever skateboard race. The event quickly grew in popularity, attracting more than 5,000 spectators and national television coverage. Competitors vied for a prize that barely covered the medical costs associated with this perilous race.
