Plot
In Nazi-occupied Slovakia during World War II, Tono, a kind-hearted but timid carpenter, finds himself thrust into the role of "Aryan comptroller" for a button shop owned by the elderly Jewish widow, Rozalie. Initially drawn by the promise of a salary and social status, Tono struggles with conflicting feelings of greed and guilt as he forms a bond with Rozalie. When the authorities announce plans to deport all Jews from the town, Tono confronts a profound moral crisis, forcing him to choose between self-preservation and standing up for his friend.
