Plot
Kikuji, heir to a prominent merchant family in Osaka, grapples with the weight of his lineage's matrilineal expectations. Under pressure from his domineering mother and grandmother to secure an heiress for their business, he watches helplessly as his wife is cast aside for bearing a son. As he descends into a life of indulgence, his relationships with mistresses yield no daughters either. Ultimately, exhaustion sets in, leaving him apathetic towards the familial legacy he once felt compelled to uphold.
