Lelia Cohanovici, a young Jewish woman from the capital, finds love with Matei Frunză, a Christian, much to the dismay of her parents, Nissim and Esther, who wish her to marry Emil Horn, a fellow Jew. As her grandfather Manasse, the family's spiritual leader, travels from Fălticeni for the wedding, Lelia makes a bold decision to elope with Matei on their wedding day. Gradually, her Jewish relatives begin to accept the couple, but the staunchly traditional Manasse faces heartbreak, ultimately succumbing to despair over his inability to thwart their union.
