Amid a chaotic time of unrest and fear that grips post-WWI Hungary, the country faces turmoil in 1919 when the brief communist government, known as the Hungarian Republic of Councils, is overthrown by a nationalist uprising. Admiral Horthy, the leader of the far-right nationalists, declares himself regent and assumes control as the legal Head of State. The remnants of the Hungarian Red Army find themselves hunted by the ruthless secret police and the Royal Gendarme. István Cserzi, a former Red Army soldier, escapes to the Great Hungarian Plains, seeking safety on a farm run by two compassionate women.
