Set in the 1890s, Father Adolf Daens arrives in Aalst, a textile hub plagued by child labor and dire working conditions. With the local Catholic Church siding with the bourgeoisie, Daens begins to write columns for a Catholic newspaper, igniting hope among workers and inciting anger among the elite. Expelled from the Catholic party, he founds the Christian Democrats and secures a seat in Parliament. Faced with discipline from Rome, he grapples with his dual roles as a priest and a labor advocate. Meanwhile, a young woman navigates love and trauma amid the turmoil, as tragedy unfolds around them.
