Plot

Naomi, a light-skinned Black girl, faces abandonment by her mother and finds solace in the care of the kind-hearted Mrs. Saunders. Struggling with an obsession for whiteness, she distances herself from her heritage and is ultimately sent to a convent for her behavior. Torn by her feelings for her adoptive brother, Jimmie, she reluctantly agrees to marry his friend. However, she grapples with her prejudices, feeling repulsed by the man's darker skin and perceived lack of refinement, leading her to confront her internal conflicts regarding identity and love.
