After the death of a leper who owned a secluded sorghum winery, Jiu'er, his purchased wife, and her unnamed lover—referred to as "my Grandpa"—step in to run the vineyard. They cultivate a unique, quasi-matriarchal society led by Jiu'er. However, the arrival of Japanese invaders leads to devastation as they destroy the sorghum fields to construct a road. In response, the resilient community unites to fight back, drawing strength from the resurgence of the sorghum, symbolizing their determination and hope for a better future.
