Episode Overview

Lou is approaching fifty, and it's his birthday. Concerned about the newly single Lou spending the day alone, Mary decides to throw him a surprise party. That evening, she invites him over for a drink, just as he expresses gratitude for her not organizing an office celebration. Suddenly, the doorbell rings, revealing Gordy with an envelope full of hats, along with other guests waiting in the hallway. Enraged, Lou attempts to escape through a nonexistent back door. Mary seeks his permission to let Murray in, followed by Rhoda and Ted, but Lou, who dislikes public displays of affection, reluctantly agrees to let everyone in. As they enter, he sneaks out to MacKluskey's bar, where they're throwing a surprise party for him. Eventually, he returns to Mary's place to apologize, realizing the guests opened his gifts at Ted's suggestion.
