Grand Tours of Scotland's Lochs (2017)
S02E04 Under Wide Skies
Episode Overview
In this episode, Paul travels to one of the most isolated railway stations in Britain, far removed from any main roads. It was originally constructed to cater to the wealthy elite who came to hunt and fish in the picturesque Flow Country. As he ventures into the wild, Paul uncovers remnants of life before the Highland clearances and examines how early industrial efforts to exploit the area's peat would have devastated its now-celebrated ecosystem. He tries his hand at gold panning in a frigid river before seeking a miraculous remedy at the remote and abandoned Loch ma Naire. His journey concludes on the shores of the Kyle of Tongue, where he discovers intriguing details about a shipment of Jacobite gold that had the potential to alter history.
