Rumpole finds himself once more in the position of defending the Timsons, who are charged with practicing Satanism, leading to their daughter Tracy being placed in the care of local authorities. Meanwhile, Hilda is subtly trying to persuade Rumpole to accompany her to this year's Scales of Justice Ball.
