Eric steps in to help Ted and Emily, a couple facing the possibility of divorce. Meanwhile, Matt makes a bold decision to enlist in the Army without discussing it with his parents. Mary and Lucy, eager to escape their home, find themselves in a car accident with a drunk Ted, who was out getting beer for his new place. Unfortunately, Matt's enlistment is thwarted as he hasn't completed the necessary measurements. Simon searches for his red-lightning ring in hopes of reversing his bad luck as the family’s new middle child and even resorts to chain letters for help.
