Mary and her basketball squad are furious when their coach decides to suspend the season, arguing that academics should come first. During a school meeting to address the issue, Eric and Annie back the coach's stance, leaving Mary and some teammates feeling betrayed. In a fit of rage, they sneak into the gym and vandalize it, only to be apprehended by the police shortly after. Meanwhile, Simon faces trouble for making an inappropriate gesture outside the school, and Matt considers the idea of going back home, while Ruthie fixates on trying to fit in with the boys.
