Great Asian Railway Journeys (2020)
S01E03 Chiang Mai to Lampang
Episode Overview
Guided by his 1913 Bradshaw’s Guide, Michael Portillo sets off on a four-part railway journey across Thailand, starting in the northern city of Chiang Mai and continuing to Kanchanaburi on the River Kwai, before heading to Bangkok and finally the coastal resort of Hua Hin. During this segment, Michael tries his skills at umbrella making and delves into the flavors of northern Thai cuisine. He wanders through the historic walled city of Chiang Mai, once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom before its annexation by the King of Siam. As he travels south to Lampang, he uncovers the region's teak wood heritage and learns how various Thai monarchs maintained their sovereignty against colonial ambitions from Britain and France. He also discovers the story of a British governess who gained fame at the royal court, along with insights into King George V's unique fondness for elephants at the British Consulate.
