Mary Ellen anxiously waits to hear about her nursing school application, while the rest of the Waltons secretly gather to create surprise farewell gifts. When she receives her acceptance, the joy is mixed with the reality that she must improve her math and science skills. To tackle this challenge, she begins studying with John-Boy and Miss Nora Taylor, the local nurse, to get the help she needs.
