Episode Overview
Detectives Ballard and Gharty delve into the mysterious death of a man found at a laundromat while the Waterfront Bar prepares for the festive Christmas season. Munch's ex-wife, Gwen, arrives to share the news of her literary critic mother’s passing. During his holiday shopping, Tim bumps into Julianna and invites her to the Waterfront's Christmas gathering. As Ballard and Gharty question the victim's girlfriend listed in his address book, they learn from Cox that he was HIV positive. She also persuades Kellerman to share information about the Mahoney videotape with Lewis and Stivers. Munch arranges a funeral discount for Gwen through his brother. Further investigation reveals the victim's mother knew about her son's HIV status and an unlisted girlfriend. Ballard and Gharty track this woman down, only to discover she is terminally ill with AIDS, leading to ethical dilemmas during their questioning.
