In a bid to catch a girl's attention, Theo decides to get his ear pierced, but Denise suspects it might be infected. Her instincts are spot on, leading Theo to seek help from Cliff. Cliff secretly hopes Grandpa Huxtable will scold Theo, but instead, Grandpa shares a hilarious tale of how Cliff once tried to impress Clair by slicking back his hair, only to accidentally burn it off! Meanwhile, Russell boasts about his past, and Anna reminds him of the time he got her name tattooed on his chest, which left a nasty scar after he attempted to remove it when she learned he was chasing another girl! This episode marks the first appearance of Clarice Taylor as Anna Huxtable, Cliff's mother.
