Tribes, Predators, and Me (2016)
S02E03 Hyena People of Ethiopia
Episode Overview
Hyenas are often met with disdain and fear, yet wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan embarks on a journey through Ethiopia to uncover how locals coexist with these formidable predators. With Ethiopia hosting the largest population of hyenas in the world, Gordon is keen to discover the reasons behind this phenomenon. His adventure begins in the bustling capital, Addis Ababa, where even the outskirts are frequented by spotted hyenas scavenging for food. Local expert Girum Henok guides Gordon on a nighttime trek through a small forest to observe these creatures. Weighing as much as 90 kilos and capable of hunting lions in packs, hyenas are remarkable hunters. Girum explains that the people here accept hyenas, believing they protect against evil spirits.
