Episode Overview

In August 1944, following the successful landings on the beaches, Allied forces pushed deeper into Normandy. The Falaise Gap, located southeast of Caen, was the last escape route available to the Germans. Facing imminent encirclement, the German troops were desperate to evacuate their forces. Fierce combat erupted in the surrounding hedgerows and fields, as the Allies fought against 150,000 resolute Germans. The Gap was ultimately sealed on August 19, leading to the surrender of around 50,000 encircled German soldiers. The losses for the Germans, particularly in heavy artillery and tanks, were devastating.
