After Masters finds out that Johnson has been pursuing romantic connections with other men, he secretly struggles with impotence, which leads him to end their sexual collaboration without her awareness. Over the next three years, he attempts to keep his clinic financially afloat by taking loans against his home, providing medical services to the hotel, and ultimately resorting to accepting financial help from his mother.
