Great Performances (1971)
S51E05 Great Performances at the Met: Champion
Episode Overview
In "Great Performances at the Met: Champion," acclaimed composer Terence Blanchard presents an opera inspired by the true story of Emile Griffith, a boxer who achieved fame while grappling with his identity as a closeted bisexual. The cast features bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green portraying the young Griffith, alongside bass-baritone Eric Owens as his older self, burdened by past regrets. Soprano Latonia Moore plays Emelda Griffith, Emile's estranged mother, while mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe takes on the role of Kathy Hagen, a gay bar owner. The production reunites the creative team behind last season's "Fire Shut Up in My Bones," with Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducting and James Robinson directing. Lawrence Brownlee serves as host.
