Becker becomes infatuated with a stunning yet clumsy temporary secretary filling in for Melman, who is away on jury duty, only to realize their connection will remain strictly professional. Meanwhile, Van Owen considers purchasing a firearm after a violent gang member retaliates against her for winning a high-profile death penalty case in the courthouse. Melman bravely confronts a bully during jury deliberations, ultimately swaying the verdict toward justice. Sifuentes finds chemistry with his new dentist and takes on her malpractice case, but their budding romance falters as she struggles to separate her work from their relationship. Faced with the possibility of Melman leaving, Becker reluctantly agrees to her salary demands.
