Perfect Storms (2013)
S01E03 Fire Twister
Episode Overview
On September 1, 1923, a powerful 7.9 magnitude earthquake strikes off Japan's coast, unleashing devastation across Tokyo, Yokohama, and nearby regions. The tremors ignite numerous fires, which rapidly escalate into a firestorm, fueled by strong winds from a nearby typhoon. In a central refuge for survivors, the inferno creates a rare phenomenon known as a "dragon twist," a fiery tornado of debris that tragically claims the lives of 35,000 to 40,000 people within just 15 minutes. This catastrophic event, known as the Great Kanto Earthquake, ultimately leads to the loss of 120,000 to 140,000 lives, marking it as Japan's deadliest disaster and steering the nation toward a militaristic future in the lead-up to World War II.
