Episode Overview

In 1755, the city of Lisbon is rocked by an intense earthquake lasting an incredible 5-6 minutes. As survivors emerge from the debris and rush to the riverbank, they are met with a devastating tsunami. The chaos escalates as fires ignite, consuming the city for eight relentless days. The catastrophe claims tens of thousands of lives and leaves Portugal severely weakened as an imperial force. However, from the devastation, a wave of new ideas and scientific inquiry begins to flourish, paving the way for the Enlightenment and a transformative era in history.
