Edmond reaches Marseille only to find out about his father's passing and that Mercedes has married and relocated to Paris. While in the city, he meets a young Italian named Jacopo, and together they flee to Italy by boat. After spending the night at Jacopo's place, Edmond takes borrowed boat and sets sail for the Island of Monte-Cristo, eager to uncover the hidden treasure.
