To warm up a cold object, its molecules must gain speed. Heat travels in three distinct manners: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction occurs when heat transfers between touching solids, like when your warm fingers meet a chilled soda can. Convection involves heat moving through liquids or gases, which is why a hot bath envelops you in warmth, not just where you sit.
