In August 1945, DCS Foyle finally finds himself unshackled from his duties after resigning from the force. With plans to embark on a lengthy trip to the United States, he is unexpectedly approached to investigate the case of James Devereaux. This young man had joined the Nazi British Free Corps during the war, and Foyle is asked to delve into the circumstances surrounding his actions before he sets off on his journey.
