The numerous shipwrecks near Roatan indicate that these waters can be perilous for passing ships; however, the reality is that many of these vessels were intentionally scuttled. The goal behind this action was to establish artificial reefs that would draw a vibrant variety of marine life and vegetation, ultimately aiming to build a sustainable ecosystem.
