Miss Farnaby is filled with anxiety as her two sisters, Adele and Elizabeth, prepare to visit. Having outshone her throughout their lives, their arrival only heightens her dread, despite Mulberry's attempts to reassure her. Her worst fears are confirmed when, after enduring the obligatory niceties and strained conversation, she finally presses them to reveal their true purpose for coming. To her dismay, they announce their intention for her to sell the manor.
