While dining at a budget-friendly diner, Martin and Eddie are taken aback when they spot an old schoolmate serving as their waitress. They engage in a conversation about their current lives and their unmet expectations, leaving them all feeling disheartened. Martin had aspirations of becoming a writer but abandoned those dreams for a steady job to support his relationship with Judith. Motivated by a wave of nostalgia, Martin decides to pick up writing again. After several attempts shown through flashbacks, he ultimately discovers his true subject: a candid and somewhat harsh play about his marriage to Judith. When he shares it with her, she feels let down. However, they work together to revise the script. After sending it out, they receive a flurry of rejections, except for one promising offer from an off-Broadway experimental theater—coincidentally, the same place where their waitress works.
