Witness (2012)
S01E02 Libya
Episode Overview
Michael Christopher Brown has visited Libya five times during the tumultuous conflicts that led to the fall of Gaddafi. Although the revolution has concluded, the nation now grapples with even greater turmoil. Ongoing internal strife is rampant; after 42 years under Gaddafi’s regime, the absence of a democratic foundation means Libya won't easily transition to stability. On a previous trip in April 2011, Brown was in Misrata alongside seasoned photojournalists Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros. He recalls the day as filled with tension, stating, "The city was like a shooting gallery that day." Tragically, a nearby mortar strike resulted in the deaths of Hetherington and Hondros, leaving Brown injured. In WITNESS: LIBYA, Brown confronts the current chaos while reflecting on the profound loss of his friends and mentors. Directed by Abdallah Omeish; produced by Julie Herrin and Josiah Hooper.
