Episode Overview

With Aunt Hetty serving as the schoolmistress in Avonlea, Felix feels like the "dunce" she often calls him. Desperate to succeed in the upcoming spelling bee, he turns to Peg Bowen, the local witch, for help with a "magic stone." However, when he loses the stone, it seems his chances are gone. Meanwhile, Felicity watches her own dreams of becoming the Spelling Champion slip away as Felix unexpectedly triumphs. In the end, Felix discovers that he had the potential to win all along; he just needed to believe in himself, as Peg had intended. A memorable line from Aunt Hetty: "Cows and sows give birth as well, but to my knowledge, this doesn't qualify them for Teachers' College."
