Although the Civil War has ended, former slaves face the threat of night riders. In a bid to protect his clients, Tom marks their horseshoes, which helps him pinpoint the raiders, putting his own safety at risk. Meanwhile, Chicken George, a Union soldier, returns to his family and guides them to a fresh start in Tennessee.
